Action for Mission

The Action for Mission Committee of St Margaret’s exists to promote understanding to the work carried out by organisations committed to Christian mission. Through this understanding encourage regular prayer to support mission. To work to raise funds which will aid the propagation of the Christian message through action and words. In particular the committee work to raise funds for the Leprosy Mission, Children in Distress, Church Army and the Church Mission Society. Our Church Mission Society link partners are Mike and Marie Wisheart currently serving in the diocese of Mara in Tanzania. In addition at the request of the PCC, we review the allocation of the annual extra parochial giving and make recommendations for their approval.

Tradecraft

The principle behind Traidcraft is that things are geared to give the workers at the “coal face” a decent living. (The spelling “Traidcraft” is deliberate, incidentally.) There is much effort in trying to cut out chains of middle men each taking a cut & living off the back of the worker in the field.

At St Margaret’s a stall was set up in 1982 on the initiative of Linda & Graham Fergusson. A grant was made by the P.C.C. to provide the initial stock. The idea was to introduce people to the principle of fairly traded goods with the hope that the idea would “catch on” & that eventually the goods would be available widespread.

Initially there were problems with the quality but these have been sorted out over the years & quality is now pretty good & items bearing the Fair Trade logo are available in the most shops & supermarkets. (The Co-op stores are a particularly good outlet for Fair Trade products.)

The stall in church is mainly for eats & drinks, biscuits, tea, coffee, chocolate, cereals etc. many other items are available including clothing & and paper goods. Even wine is fairly traded but we would need a licence to sell this in church. (The co-op usually has Fair Trade wine.)

The stall “ticks over nicely, making a small profit to enable to enable buying of replacement stock.

It beats the supermarket prices consistently with “geobars” & usually with the “cookies”.

The chocolate is of particularly good quality although not cheap. The tea and coffee, & cereals are particularly good.

Anyone who would enjoy playing shops would be welcome in helping on the stall rota.tradecraft

Sponsoring the Floodlights

St Margaret’s Church is a major feature of the Horsforth skyline and its award winning floodlighting enhances the attractiveness of the village at night.
However, it costs us around £5 to run the floodlights for one evening, as an average over the year.

You can help us to keep the floodlights on by sponsoring the running costs for an evening and using that to commemorate some personal or family event or anniversary. We shall print ant short dedication you choose in the church magazine- but your sponsorship can be anonymous if you wish. Don’t forget that you need to make your request by the beginning of the month before your chosen date for the dedication to appear in the appropriate magazine.

If you would like to sponsor the floodlighting, please contact Harry Tripp (0113 2583517) for further details.
